In-Depth Guide to Saving Money at Best Buy

Best Buy is one of the last nationwide electronics stores that’s been able to stick around. As competitors like Circuit City and Radioshack have faltered, Best Buy has been able to outlast them and thrive due to a large selection, high-quality products and always-reasonable prices.

Best Buy’s rewards program, called My Best Buy, has been around for a while, but was overhauled in 2013. The basic membership is free, and you can join in store or online. All it takes to sign up is your name, email address and phone number. My Best Buy has three big perks — rewards, exclusive offers, and free shipping. Let’s take them one by one, shall we?

For the rewards system, one dollar is equal to one point. Once you’ve earned 250 points, you automatically receive a $5 rewards certificate. You can also change the settings if you’d like to save up your points to receive a $20 certificate at 1,000 points instead. Be careful with this, though, because points do expire after a year. These certificates work just like a coupon and there’s no minimum purchase, as long as you’re spending the amount on the coupon.

The exclusive offers are a great way to find extra discounts on products and really makes it worth signing up for the program even if you don’t think you’ll spend enough to earn a certificate. Members receive special offers, like percentage discounts off specific products. They’re also the first to receive notifications of sales and have early access to promotions. The other major perk is free shipping on purchases above $35. This doesn’t count fees for things that require a scheduled delivery, like fridges and stoves, but everything else is included.

There’s also an Elite and Elite Plus version of the membership. To be an Elite member, you have to make $1,500 in purchases in a calendar year, and $3,500 to be an Elite Plus member. There are some great perks that come with the Elite and Elite Plus memberships as well. First, returns are extended. Best Buy’s return policy is very limited — regular returns are only valid within 15 days of purchase. With an Elite membership, that’s extended to 30 days, and 45 days for Elite Plus members.

Elite and Elite Plus members can also bank their points toward higher certificates, and their points never expire. Point bonuses are another great perk of the Elite and Elite Plus memberships. Elite members earn 1.1 point for every dollar spent, which means a $5 reward for every $227.27 spent. Elite Plus members earn 1.25 points for every dollar spent, which means a $5 reward for every $200 spent.

The My Best Buy credit card is another option to earn rewards. With the credit card, you get 5 percent back in rewards and 12-month interest-free financing on in-store purchases greater than $399. Another perk is that it’s much easier to get to Elite or Elite Plus because the purchase minimums apply to everything you put on the card, not only Best Buy purchases.

Best Buy’s website has a “deal of the day” section that’s worth checking out. It’s very straightforward — there’s a huge discount each day on one specific item. The item is almost always more than 25 percent off and is regularly more than 50 percent off, and the deal expires at the end of the day. Supplies for these items are limited, so the best ones do sell out. You may want to sign up for their daily newsletter so you don’t miss out on a great deal on something you wanted.

Best Buy outlet is another way to get excellent discounts on Best Buy’s website. They pioneered the idea of outlet shopping online and have truly amazing deals. Best Buy outlet features a combination of clearance, open-box, refurbished and pre-owned items. It’s very user-friendly, and you can shop by category, brand, or even savings level. With Best Buy outlet, you can choose free in-store pickup to avoid dealing with shipping fees or deliveries. These items can also be returned or exchanged. Manufacturer warranties do apply, but they’re not always still valid, like if it’s a pre-owned or refurbished item and it’s already past the amount of time the warranty lasts. You can check with customer service to see whether or not there’s a warranty on a specific item if that’s something that concerns you.

Best Buy also has an extensive price match guarantee, so you don’t have to stress about missing out on a better price! They’ll match any local retail competitor’s in-store or online price for like items, and they also match identical products sold at Amazon, B&H, Crutchfield, Dell, HP, NewEgg and Tiger Direct, as well as prices on Best Buy’s own website. They do not, however, match prices from third party marketplace sellers on or on sites like Amazon. Mail-in rebates, outlet items, clearance, coupons and flash sales are also excluded. There are also no price matches from Thanksgiving day through Cyber Monday.

Another way to save at Best Buy is by shopping with gift cards bought at Cardpool is a site that offers discounted gift cards for tons of stores. Best Buy gift cards have a 5.5 percent discount on Cardpool. Although that doesn’t sound like a whole lot, it’s 5 percent off for little to no effort. You can use up to 10 gift cards per purchase at Best Buy.
